The Reductive Harm of Pop-Spirituality: How the Law of Attraction Undermines Established Women Business Owners from Fully Realizing A Mature, Integrated Body of Work

About 15 years ago, I started noting how the messages of popular spirituality were conflicting with the teachings of my lineage-based practice, how easy it was to be seduced by their simplicity and their certainty, their promise of comfort and material wealth—and how, in those conflicts and that seduction, they caused harm.

I felt it most acutely when the strategies that had previously worked for me in my business stopped working and I couldn’t figure out why.

First, if like attracts like, was I supposed to understand a business or financial failure as a spiritual failure? That I refused outright.

Second, the focus on outcome ran completely contrary to the detachment from outcome that is fundamental to the Bhagavad Gita—and every tradition of spiritual practice I’d ever encountered. That I could not square.

I don’t say much about this. I typically stay in my lane. I share affirmatively from my adopted tradition of spiritual practice, rather than criticize, deconstruct or rage against popular spiritual tropes.

Everyone has their own process of evolution. It is not for me to be so arrogant to step in unbidden to make a judgment about that. It might be exactly what they need as a threshold.

And for me, it’s a waste of my Śaktī. It disperses my energy; it dilutes the transmissional power of my voice. And it makes the reduction of spiritual practice by these tropes the frame, rather than putting my lineage, my training and my experience at the center of my messaging and my body of work.

But the reductive truisms of pop-spirituality have become so ubiquitous that even experienced business owners in traditional professions with highly analytical minds have absorbed them.

And it creates a particular type of dissonance in you that stymies—or can even reject—the full realization of your mature, integrated body of work.

In today’s episode of Sacred & Strategic, I deconstruct how the “law of attraction” and its related strands of pop-spirituality conflate physical & spiritual laws and create this dissonance in experienced women business owners, and I offer a practice for reclaiming your spiritual nuance and depth.

I work privately with a small number of clients—through a synthesis of sacred practice, strategic precision and structural coherence—to midwife your mature, integrated body of work into its full realization.
